The Hummingbird-Hawk Moth

Florence, Italy ~ August 2022

The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) has long been noted in European folklore for its unusual flight, often mistaken for a hummingbird. Native to southern Europe, it feeds on nectar while hovering in mid-air, its long proboscis unfurled as it moves between flowers.

These photographs were taken in the beautiful gardens of Hotel Torre Di Bellosguardio, Florence, Italy and capture the moth’s rapid wingbeats and bright orange hindwings as it feeds on summer wildflowers.

Interestingly they migrate to the UK from Southern Europe each year.
